Officer 1 Bandmaster SP Davis LRSM Royal Marines
Warrant Officer 1 Bandmaster Simon Davis joined the
Royal Marines School of Music at Deal on 25 April 1977 as an adult
entry. After 12 weeks he completed his training and was subsequently
drafted to the Staff Band at the Royal Marines School of Music where
he stayed for three years before moving to The Band of Her Majesty’s
Royal Marines, Flag Officer Third Flotilla. Whilst as a member of
this band he saw Service afloat onboard HMS Invincible, as part
of her maiden voyage and as part of the Dartmouth Training Ships
with HMS Intrepid and HMS Fearless, performing in many countries
around the globe. Returning to the Staff Band at Deal in 1982 he
attended various promotion courses culminating with a successful
pass of the WO2 Bandmasters Course in 1991. A draft to BRNC Dartmouth
followed where he was promoted to Band Sergeant in 1992. In January
1994 he returned to sea, this time as a Volunteer Band Instructor
onboard HMS Ark Royal. The ship's deployments included service in
the Adriatic supporting NATO Forces in the Former Yugoslavia. From
HMS Ark Royal he was drafted to the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal
Marines, Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland in June 1995
and promoted to Colour Sergeant in 1997. January 1998 saw another
move and promotional appointment as WO2 Bandmaster to the Band of
Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, Portsmouth and consequently joined
the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, Britannia Royal Naval College,
Dartmouth in March 1999. Further promotion came after a successful
WO1’s promotion board in January 2000 and with it an opportunity
to be in charge of the Band at Dartmouth in the absence of the Director
of Music due to operational commitments. In September 2002 he was
back ‘north of the border’ as Bandmaster of the Band of Her Majesty’s
Royal Marines Band, Scotland and in January 2006 was
appointed as Bandmaster Training at The Royal Marines School of
Music before moving to his curent appointment as the Bandmaster of the Band of HM Royal Marines Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. His interests include sailing, golf and the turbulent form
of Southampton Football Club.
