Captain Ian Davis BMus(Hons) MMus(Dist) LRSM AMusTCL RM

Captain Ian Davis RMIan Davis’s first music lessons were given by his grandfather, a clarinet teacher at the Northamptonshire County Music School. Progressing quickly at the clarinet, he performed with various bands, orchestras and wind ensembles in the local area. Ian joined the Royal Marines School of Music at Deal at 18, and was posted to the Scotland Band as its principal clarinettist. During a 10 year appointment he toured with the Scotland band to Australia, Canada, the West Indies and the Far East.

As a newly promoted Corporal, Ian commanded a ‘Green Goddess’ fire engine during the 2002 fireman’s dispute, and then joined RFA Argus as a casualty handler during the Gulf Conflict.

On leaving the Scotland band, Ian was appointed to the Royal Marines School of Music as the Solo Clarinet Instructor and achieved his Certificate of Teaching from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Ian was subsequently invited to attend the 12 month Warrant Officer Bandmaster’s course, during which he gained the LRSM diploma in music direction (Wind Band) and AMusTCL diploma in musical theory, criticism and literature. He was also awarded the Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians for his skills as student bandmaster. He went on to achieve his Bachelor of Music degree with first class honours.

Ian Davis was commissioned in January 2009. Having passed the Senior Corps Commission Officers Course, he was promoted Captain and completed a temporary appointment as Director of Music to the Plymouth Band, based at HMS Raleigh at Torpoint. He then spent some time at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester studying the art of conducting with Clark Rundell, Sir Mark Elder and Tim Reynish, before joining the Band of HM Royal Marines Scotland as the Director of Music in the summer of 2010.
