Bugle Major Paul Annett Royal Marines

Bugle Major Paul 'Scouse' Annett joined the Royal Marines Band Service in May 1989 at the age of 17. After successfully passing his B3 examination early, Paul joined the Band of HM Royal Marines Commander in Chief Naval Home Command at Eastney Barracks, Portsmouth in October 1990; possibly the last Bugler to have joined the band before the Barracks closed and relocated to HMS Nelson. During this period he was able to take part in a memorable (and extremely intensive) three month tour of New Zealand.

During his time in Portsmouth, Paul was selected for duties on board HMY Britannia from 1993 to 1995, travelling extensively around the Globe; this is still one of many highlights in his career to date. In 1996, he successfully completed a Junior Command Course and in 1998 was drafted to RM Band Scotland for two years before being promoted to Corporal Bugler in 2000 and a move back to RM Band Portsmouth.

In 2001 he successfully completed the B1 course and the following year passed the Senior Command course, being promoted to ‘Acting’ Sergeant Bugler on his return to the band. Paul was selected to instruct at the RMSoM in Portsmouth from 2006 to 2008, which gave him the opportunity to pass on his skills and experiences to the trainee Buglers. Following this highly successful period in Paul’s career, he was drafted to the Band at CTCRM for four months to lead the Corps of Drums and then to RM Band Plymouth where he received further promotion to Colour Sergeant Bugler.

In April 2010 Paul made the return journey back to the Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth, and was appointed Bugle Major Portsmouth Band, something he has aspired to since the day he joined the Royal Marines Band Service back in 1989.

Paul is married to Helen and currently resides in the Portsmouth area and has two daughters Rachel and Lucy.
