Warrant Officer 2 Bandmaster Alistair Cox BMus(Hons) LRSM AMusTCL RM
Warrant Officer Alistair Cox joined the Royal Marines Band Service as a clarinet and violin player in September 1987 at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal, Kent. On completion of initial training he was drafted to the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, Commander in Chief Fleet.
In October 1990, he was one of forty band ranks deployed in RFA ARGUS in support of Operation GRANBY in the Persian Gulf. Other memorable trips during this time included visits to Murmansk and Archangel in northern Russia in HMS LONDON as part of the 50th anniversary commemorations of the first Russian convoys in 1991 and the three month ORIENT ‘92 deployment in HMS INVINCIBLE to the Far East.
In 1994, Alistair was drafted to the Portsmouth band. Whilst here, he completed Junior and Senior command courses and the M1 course at RMSoM. In 2002, he was selected for the Bandmasters’ course and on successful completion was presented with the Silver Medal from The Worshipful Company of Musicians, awarded to the top student of the course. Following the Bandmasters’ course, Alistair also won the Vivian Dunn composition competition. Further studies followed towards the Bachelor of Music degree and in July 2007, Alistair graduated with First Class Honours.
After two and a half very enjoyable years in the Scotland Band, Alistair returned to Portsmouth, was promoted to Warrant Officer 2 and took up his present appointment as the Chief Instructor of Higher Training in January 2009. Originally from South Wales he is more familiarly known to friends and colleagues throughout the Band Service as ‘Taff’. In addition to music, his other interests include classic cars, Asian cooking and all types of fishing.
