The Decon I Story
The Final Journey

by Musn Tim Hinde

As we entered Basra we were reminded of what we had seen in Um Qassar. On every corner we were greeted by pathetic people begging for food and water, but surprisingly they seemed pleased that we were there. We soon entered the palace grounds which were a stark contrast to the city outside. As far as the eye could see there were palm trees, lakes and marbled bridges. For a couple of days we were able to 'live the high-life' (being Bandies we accept nothing less), sleeping on marble floors below ornate ceilings. But this was to be short lived, and we were returned to the Naval Base.
It wasn't long though before 8 of our group were sent back to Kuwait to guard some containers belonging to 3 Commando Brigade. Despite being told that this would be an arduous experience, we ended up in an American base, eating real food, which proved to be the most comfort we had seen in months. But as with all good things it too came to an end and we soon returned to the Naval Base to finish our time in Iraq.
During the last weeks we were able to participate in a Brigade football tournament, in which some thirty teams entered. Much to the annoyance of many of our 'Bootneck' colleagues the band team finished a very respectable fourth.
After what seemed like an eternity we finally received the details for our flight home, and after several postponements, began the 15 hour Hercules flight home. At six o'clock in the morning we all arrived at Exeter airport to be greeted by Major Andy Thornhill bearing a few well-earned beers!
Everyone who took part in the ground part of Op Telic should be very proud of what they have achieved. Thanks must go to our Seniors and Corporals who supported us throughout, making sure that the best was made of a difficult and dangerous situation, and lastly to the other members of Decon 1 and 2 who acted with professionalism and determination and rightly became respected throughout Commando Logistic Regiment.
