Royal Marines Corps of DrumsOn successful completion of Phase 1 Military Training, individuals commence Phase 2 Musical Training. This structured and intensive 2 year course includes professorial lessons for each instrument of study per week, academic tuition and, when trained to an acceptable standard, the opportunity to perform in a variety of musical ensembles including Corps of Drums, Fanfare Team, Marching Band, Parade Band and Concert Band.

In view of the substantial number of high profile engagements the Royal Marines Band Service undertake each year, individuals will be required to perform at a level comparable to Grade 8 / recital performance on Bb bugle, Eb herald trumpet and military snare drum. Throughout the course, progress is closely monitored by regular assessments, both formative (to ensure progression through the curriculum) and summative (to provide accurate and detailed information about a students’ current level of achievement).

In addition to practical skills, individuals are required to undertake various academic lessons including harmony, theory, history of music and aural training; all of which are monitored by-way-of regular assessments. Dedicated professors and uniformed staff, teaches each subject; therefore ensuring a common and supportive approach to a students’ progress.

Throughout the course there is an opportunity to attend master classes, clinics, conferences and specific concerts; all of which help inspire the students’ performances. Furthermore, within the Royal Marines School of Music, individuals are provided with a practice room, specific training aids and a Research Centre which includes CDs, musical literature and listening facilities - all in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

In view of this innovative, fresh and positive approach to Buglers Training, the Royal Marines School of Music has an exclusive partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, enabling Buglers the opportunity to attain a Diploma on their instruments of study. The training received at all levels is a clear indicator of the determination to maintain the highest and recognised musical standards.
