TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF NAVAL AVIATION, WE ARE GIVING MUSICIANS AROUND THE COUNTRY THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER A COMPETITION TO COMPOSE A PIECE OF MUSIC FOR THE MASSED BANDS OF HER MAJESTY’S ROYAL MARINES. THE PIECE IS TO BE PERFORMED AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL.

Not only will the winning composition be performed and recorded live at the Mountbatten Festival of Music 2009, the composer will also receive a prize of £2,000.

The composition will take the form of a soundtrack accompanying an 8 minute film depicting 100 years of Naval aviation.

The composition Judging Panel will include:

  • The Principal Director of Music Royal Marines
  • Mr Nigel Clarke
  • Mr Robin Dewhurst
  • Commander Geoff Bowker Royal Navy

To enter, all you need to do is register your details and then download the Naval aviation film footage by right clicking HERE and 'save target as' to your local drive (12Mb WMV File)

All applications must be submitted by 31st August 2008.

COMPOSITION DETAILS AND CLOSING DATE
All compositions must be submitted as a hard copy score and full set of symphonic wind band parts. A Sibelius file or similar would be helpful but not essential.

COMPETITION RULES

1. The competition is open to all musicians throughout the United Kingdom.

2. Compositions must be:

  • original
  • written for a full Symphonic Wind Band
  • 8 minutes in length to play alongside the film footage

5. The Mountbatten Festival of Music 2009 recording will be on sale to the general public and therefore The Royal Marines Band Service reserve the right to perform and record the winning composition. 

6. Film footage is crown copyright and must not be reproduced in any form.

7. The Judges’ decision is final.

8. If no composition is deemed suitable, the prize will not be awarded.

9. The winning composer will be notified by letter on completion of the competition.

10. Unsuccessful composers will also be informed.
