Sergeant John Bissett was born in, Caithness in 1969 to a family of 2 sisters and 1 brother. John joined the Royal Marines Commando’s in January 1989. On completion of training he joined 45 Commando Scotland where he travelled widely with the unit including Norway deployments, Brunei, Northern Ireland and Northern Iraq in 1991.
In 1992 he joined Comacchio Group who providing protection for the UK’s nuclear weapons and was promoted Lance Corporal and returned to carry out another tour of N. Ireland.
John returned to 45CdoRM in 2004 where he deployed to the Gulf on OP Driver and another tour of Northern Ireland. In 1997 John successfully completed his Junior Command Course at the Commando Training Centre before returning to 45CdoRM and carried out winter deployments to Norway and exercises in the jungles of Brunei and Belize.
In 1999 John returned to the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines as a Platoon Weapons Instructor taking 775 & 791 troops through their Commando training. A move north of the border followed in December 2000 when John joined the Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines (FPGRM) where he spent two years with SOE troop on various duties and exercises until 2003.
At the start of Operation Telic John moved back to 45 Commando in time to deployed with W Company to the OP Telic 2 in the Gulf, whilst in this unit he returned Northern Ireland, as well as more Arctic training in Norway. In 2005 he returned to CTCRM and qualified as a Platoon Weapons Instructor 1.
John joined the Military Training Team at the Royal Marines School of Music in August 2005 to help take Troop 2/05 through their training. Troop 1/07 is John's the third troop from the Royal Marines Band Service that he has taken through basic training.
