Musn Wheway was born on 25 December 1990 and has a younger brother and an older sister who is also in the Royal Marines Band Service. She has lived in Derbyshire all her life and started swimming from a very early age. She mostly enjoyed school and worked hard. Just after her eighth birthday she started to learn the violin which she found a bit difficult at times, but never stopped practising. When she was ninth she moved house and made many new friends, but could not continue swimming, so concentrated solely on her music practice in her spare time. She started learning the oboe and piano at the age of 11, and at that time was in the Staffordshire Talent School for young musicians. She saw an advert in a magazine for the Royal Marines Band Service when she was 13, which convinced her and her sister to join the Royal Marines Band Service. She has been involved in various ensembles, the most recent being the Derby Concert Orchestra, Derbyshire Youth County Wind Band and Staffordshire Youth Orchestra. Prior to joining she played the viola, violin, oboe and piano to Grade 8 standard, and her category for the Band Service is viola and clarinet. She gained nine GCSEs at the end of year 11 and worked at the Little Chef before joining the Band Service.
