Prior to joining the Royal Marines Band Service Musn Pearson lived in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, with his parents and two younger brothers. With help from one grandparent in particular, who taught him to play, he found his interest in music.
As a beginner, he started to play the baritone at 7 years old, but never really progressed musically until he went to high school, where he played in the school’s brass band until leaving in 2005. During this period he was put onto the Eb bass and developed as a result of the challenging pieces he had to learn.
Playing solos in Disneyland Paris and the Whit Friday March Contests, were just two examples of his highlights in that band.
He then became a member of the Oldham (Lees) Brass Band in late 2005 on Bb bass before swapping to the Eb bass at Christmas 2006. The extra need to practise was emphasised as that Band was at a high standard, even though in the 4th section at that time, and are now hopeful of entering the BB 2nd section by January.
Before he began his training he was studying a BTEC National Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science, with the intentions of starting a degree in the same subject and a PGCE to become a PE teacher at secondary level. However: “I thought joining the Royal Marines Band Service was a much better idea! I’m sure I’ll think the same after training”.
