Sgt ‘Griff” Griffin joined the Corps aged 17 yrs in 1991 and after successfully completing training was awarded The Commando Medal. His first draft was to A Company, better know throughout the Corps as “The Saints”, 40 Commando Royal Marines. Whilst with 40 Commando he served in Kuwait, the Caribbean and Norway before going to West Belfast in 1993/94. Having completed the Northern Ireland Tour he joined the Reconnaissance Troop where he once again served in the Caribbean and Norway. In 1995 he joined the Royal Marines Detachment on HMS Endurance, travelling to South America and Antarctica whilst employed as a Ships Diver in the ice diving team. 1996 saw a draft to 45 Command Royal Marines in Arbroath joining the Fleet Standby Rifle Troop where he worked operationally in Indonesia, Albania and Sierra Leone during recent hostilities. In 1999 he successfully completed the Junior Command Course before joining the PT2’s course (Physical Training Instructor second class). Lasting for six months and being physically and mentally exceptionally demanding this was by far the hardest thing he had done in his career. After successfully completing the PT2’s course he was employed in Commando Training Centre Royal Marines as a Troop PTI (Physical Training Instructor). Sgt Griffin joined the Royal Marines School of Music in May 2000 and is the Troop PTI to New Entry Troop 1/00 responsible for their general physical fitness and physical development. To date he is a ships diver and parachutist and is also arctic and jungle warfare trained. He is qualified as an Adventure Training Instructor (climbing, kayaking, canoeing) and is currently an assistant boxing coach and a club level athletics coach as well as a Royal Marines PTI. Sgt Griffin relishes his task of helping transform willing, enthusiastic young people into physically fit robust members of the Royal Marines Band Service.
