Tuesday
0630 the alarm wakes us ready to start a new week at the RMSM after a well deserved
long weekend. Today I got some good news from the Director of Music and found
out I was able to change category from Clarinet and Viola to Solo clarinet which
in my eyes is a big step forward. That afternoon I said goodbye to my viola
for the last time as I handed it back to Richard in the stores. It wasn't quite
the last time I would see this instrument as I realised I had a small orchestra
gig for Trafalgar Night the following day, not long though.
That evening was topped off by a visit from the students on the M1 Course who
were practising conducting for a gig we have with them in November. We played
pieces that included A Yorkshire Overture and Theatre Music both composed by
the great Philip Sparke.
Wednesday
Parade Band was first with an hour and a half of inspections and drill. We were
marching without playing so as to perfect our straight lines and personal drill.
After stand easy we had a rehearsal for the Trafalgar Dinner the following evening.
The afternoon was spent down at Southsea Common playing softball which was a
nice break.
Thursday
We had PT first in the gym, this was taken by a member of Portsmouth Band and
went quite well. After lunch the small orchestra went to the Old Naval Academy
in the dockyard to rig up for tonight's gig.
The gig went without a hitch and a good time was had by all. The officers especially
enjoyed singing with the band. The songs included Heart of Oak, Spanish Ladies
and Rule Britannia.
Friday
Parade Band first thing to work on dressing and drill but after the first half
an hour the Drum Major was very happy and we were allowed to play our instruments
again, we played HM Jollies, Sailing and Sarie Marais. It was this private practice
till lunch, then we had choir in our lunchtime which went quite well. The afternoon
was spent in orchestra taken by Major Best. This was my first time in orchestra
on the clarinet and I think it went quite well.
