A busy week lay ahead for trainees at the school of music. We had only been
back from leave for 2 weeks and preparations were under way for 2 gigs at the
end of the week. It was a challenge for everyone especially as unforeseen circumstances
were about to play havoc with precious rehearsal time, bringing a special meaning
to the saying, 'the show must go on!' to all concerned.
Rehearsals began on Tuesday evening with a shaky start leading to a few veins
appearing on the Bandmaster's forehead. The programme included pieces such as
'Phantom of the Opera', 'Amazing Grace', 'A Yorkshire overture', 'Battle of
Britain' and a piece which gave me and my fellow saxophone players a few grey
hairs, 'In the Miller Mood'. For the rest of the week excerpts of the programme
could be heard echoing through the school.
The saxophone section became increasingly unpopular as glimpses of 'In the Miller
Mood' were being played like a broken record. Not to worry, Wednesday afternoon
arrived and all self doubts and apprehensions were put to one side as we participated
in RT, this week's activity was ten pin bowling.
Feeling refreshed and relaxed we were ready for anything that Thursday had to
offer, or so we thought!
For me the day included a dace band rehearsal, a quartet and elements lesson
as well as personal practise.
I was making the most of the last few hours of practice as fast approaching
was our final rehearsal, a full run through before the big day. If only we knew
the disruption that was about to occur. For the remainder of the evening, the
whole night and the majority of the morning all of HMS Nelson was evacuated
due to a bomb scare - a second World War bomb had been discovered by builders
working in the dockyard.
As a result evening rehearsals were cancelled and we were left with little option
other than to verbally rehearse in the pub.
Gradually Friday returned to normal, however the musicians were feeling a little
worse for wear having had little sleep- what a relief we could make use of our
survival skills and 'rough it' in comfort!
Not long now, a quick sound check and it would be show time. Everyone was feeling
a little apprehensive but with a convincing smile from the Bandmaster and our
fingers crossed we managed to get through it.
