On Friday May 4th Musn Thompson, Musn Naylor, Musn Parker, Musn Walker and
myself were granted leave to attend a Corps Swimming Gala at HMS Drake in Plymouth.
Not many girls turned up to swim and so we went away winning every medal they
had. Congratulations to Musn Thompson who won Best Overall Female.
Sat 5 May was a normal working morning for my troop which included Concert Band
with Sgt Lloyd. The rest of the weekend was spent doing the usual shopping,
socialising and sleeping.
The 7 and 8 of May were the start of the M3 examinations for students in their
last term of training. This exam must be passed before you are allowed to leave
the School of Music and join one of the 5 Bands of HM Royal Marines.
Whilst the students involved were nervously awaiting their exams, it was practice
as usual for me.
Wednesday 9 May was an exciting day for me as it was my first gig for the School
of Music. It was held at a local Infant School in Portsmouth and I was playing
2nd Bassoon. My instructor Sgt Lloyd was conducting the concert and he likes
to get us to stand up and demonstrate and explain about our instruments. As
it was my first gig, nobody was expecting me to have to stand up, however my
instructor wanted me to sweat a little and called me out to the front of the
stage. Luckily he did not make me play in front of everyone but I was still
very nervous. The gig however went well and I was pleased with my performance.
Thursday the 10 and Friday 11 were normal days of practice with extra rehearsal
on Thursday night and Parade Band on Friday, which for me means playing the
cymbals as I am Bassoon and Cymbals category.
Students who took their M3 exams received their results on Friday 11th and congratulations
to everyone for passing with such excellent results.
