Before joining the Royal Marines, in 1986 aged 21, CSgt
'Stevie' Fulthorpe worked as a postman in Gateshead. Whilst under training
at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines he was awarded the PT Superior,
for being one of the best recruits in PT sessions in the first 15 weeks
of training. On completion of training he was awarded the PT Medal for being
the most physically fit recruit in the troop at PT throughout the whole
of training. His first draft was to 42 Commando Royal Marines where he completed
a tour of Northern Ireland, served in Norway and took part in Royal Duties
guarding the Tower of London. Having boxed for 13 years prior to joining
the Corps, in 1987 CSgt Fulthorpe was selected to become a full time member
of the Royal Navy Boxing Team competing against the Royal Air Force and
Army boxing teams on many occasions. During his time with the Royal Navy
Team he won several major competitions and titles including the Royal Navy
and Combined Services Champion and was selected as a member of the National
Boxing Team. With an impressive record of 98 wins in 116 bouts CSgt Fulthorpe
has now retired from competitive boxing and was appointed coach of the Royal
Navy Boxing Team. In 1991 he joined the PT2's course (Physical Training
Instructor second class) at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines and
after successfully passing it he took part in the PT display at the Festival
of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall. He was now a member of the PTI
branch (Physical Training Instructor), or as they prefer "The Branch of
Gods". Whilst serving in Commando Training Centre he trained over 250 Royal
Marines Commandos for duty before he was drafted as a PTI with Special Forces
serving with them for two years. He joined Commachio Group Royal Marines
in 1996 and during his year there was employed as a Troop Sergeant guarding
the Royal Navy's Nuclear Submarines. After successfully completing the PT1's
course (Physical Training Instructor first class) at the Commando Training
Centre Royal Marines CSgt Fulthorpe joined the Commando Display Team for
a season. Throughout his time with the team he travelled the length and
breadth of the country taking part in unarmed combat and helicopter abseiling
displays. CSgt Fulthorpe joined the Royal Marines School of Music in January
1999 as the coordinator of physical training for New Entry Training and
the Band Service as a whole. As an exercise therapist and qualified sports
therapist he is involved in the rehabilitation of injuries for people serving
in the Portsmouth area and at present he is in the second year of a sports
science degree at St Mary's College Twickenham. Working with the Band Service
has been a different but very enjoyable part of his PT career. He said "Whilst
nurturing these young musicians along is very different to training commandos
it is never the less extremely satisfying".
